Building in Public: The Unfair Advantage
The best marketing strategy I've ever used costs nothing, requires no ad budget, and compounds every single day. It's called building in public — and most founders are sleeping on it.
Why Transparency Wins
We live in an era of polished highlight reels. Every founder on Twitter is "crushing it." Every launch is "record-breaking." Everyone's revenue is up and to the right. And nobody believes any of it.
Building in public cuts through the noise because it's the opposite of performance. It's showing the messy middle — the failed experiments, the ugly first versions, the real numbers. And paradoxically, that honesty is what makes people trust you.
"People don't connect with perfection. They connect with process."
The Flywheel Effect
Here's what happens when you share your building journey consistently:
- →You share a win or lesson → people engage and share it
- →New people discover you → some become followers, some become customers
- →Customers already trust you → sales cycle drops to nearly zero
- →Their success becomes your next case study → cycle repeats
This is the flywheel. It's slow at first — painfully slow. But once it's spinning, it generates opportunities you never could have planned for. Podcast invites, partnerships, investor intros, talent that wants to work with you — all from sharing what you're already doing.
What to Share (And What Not To)
Building in public doesn't mean sharing everything. It means sharing strategically. Here's my framework:
✅ Share
Lessons learned, metrics (even bad ones), behind-the-scenes process, failed experiments, tools and stack, decision-making frameworks, milestones and progress updates.
❌ Don't Share
Proprietary competitive advantages, customer private data, team internal conflicts, unvalidated complaints about others, anything you'd regret in 5 years.
The sweet spot is being open about your journey while protecting your edge. Share the what and why, keep the exact how when it's your moat.
My Results After 12 Months
When I started sharing my building journey, I had maybe 200 followers across platforms and zero inbound leads. Twelve months of consistent building in public later:
500+
Community members
$0
Spent on ads
3
Businesses launched
100%
Inbound-driven revenue
Not a single cold email. Not a single ad dollar. Every customer, partner, and opportunity came from people who watched me build and decided they wanted in.
Just Start
The biggest objection I hear: "But I'm not far enough along to share anything interesting." That's exactly the point. The most compelling building-in-public content comes from Day 1, not Day 1000. People want to watch the transformation, not the trophy.
Pick one platform. Post once a day about what you're working on. Share a number, a lesson, or a screenshot. Do it for 30 days and see what happens.
I promise you — the opportunities will surprise you.
